A brass zodiac disc, a turning coin set into its back.
The twelve animals each take a year in turn, and carrying your own has been a habit in Chinese households for a long time, most of all in the year it comes round again. The other face is a coin cast with 招财进宝, bring in wealth and treasure, the four characters stamped on charms for centuries. It turns in its setting, and turning it is the point: the Chinese name for the piece means turning money, a small thing for the hand to do while you wait.
It hangs from car keys or a bag, and is usually bought for someone about to enter their own zodiac year.
