Lifting a teapot, a stone or a figure onto carved wood sets it apart from everything around it and says it was put there on purpose. This one is cut in the root-carving style, the base left knotted and flowing, then lacquered dark.
It takes a gaiwan in the centre with a cup either side, or a small Buddha with an offering bowl at each hand.
