In the tradition cinnabar is worn as living protection, the red believed to steady vitality and turn misfortune aside before it settles.
The Heart Sutra is the shortest and most recited of the great Buddhist texts, and the lotus its companion image, the flower that rises clean from muddy water. Carved together on a small stone, they make a text worn rather than read.
