A laughing Buddha in rough clay, seated inside a ring of light.
Budai is kept for contentment, the monk who laughs at what other people worry over, and for the fortune that seems to follow anyone that easy to be around. Here he sits on a plank of dark wood with a cup raised, a crescent of warm light behind him and an incense holder at the top of the arc, so the smoke drifts down through the glow. The clay is left matte and unglazed, in the zisha manner, so the figure reads as carved rather than painted.
It comes in two poses, one drawing wealth in and one handing it out, and is lit in the evening on an entryway console or a study shelf once the room has gone quiet.
