A dragon in obsidian, rising through cloud over the sea.
The carving is the old motif of the dragon over the four seas, 龙腾四海, the creature of the east and of rain, kept for ambition, authority and rising standing. The figure is polished to a high black where the ground around it is left frosted, so the dragon stands out in relief without a line of colour.
Obsidian is volcanic glass, long kept for protection and for holding the attention steady. The back is left plain and polished so the tablet sits flat against the chest, and it hangs on a knotted cord of black beads. Worn under a shirt through a working week, or given to a man born in a dragon year.
