The beckoning cat, eyes squeezed shut in a grin, paw waving on sunlight.
Maneki-neko started in the shops of Edo Japan and has sat by tills across East Asia ever since, one paw raised to call people in through the door. This one wears the classic gold coin marked ten million, and a fan of smaller coins across its belly printed with the old wishes, fortune, luck, prosperity, each one a thing a shopkeeper hopes the year brings. Its narrowed eyes are the smiling kind, the cat that already knows it is going well. A solar cell in the base keeps the paw going as long as there is light.
Bought for a shop opening, the counter of a cafe or salon, or the dashboard of a delivery van. The small one suits a windowsill at home.
Placement: by the till or in the front window, facing the door, where it gets light.
